When Looking for Nursing Degree Programs Online, there are many things you may wish to consider. Here are some of the questions that you may ask yourself when pursuing Nursing Degree Programs Online:-

1) How do I know which online college or university is the best one for me?

There has been a monumental rise in people seeking online education and degrees over the past few years and although there are many so called educational institutions, that will merely part you from your money..a wide spectrum of legitimate colleges and universities can be found. Nursing Degree Programs Online are probably one of the most popular degrees sought, so finding an accredited college online should not prove to be difficult. You can check the authenticity of the program offered, by verifying the college’s details with the department of education database and also that the program is recognized by your state’s Board of Nursing.

2) What Type of Degree Should I Be Studying For?

There are many Nursing Degree Programs Online that you may wish to consider. You will find that most careers in nursing will require, at minimum, an associate degree in nursing or healthcare as an entry requirement. Although if your career aspirations are for a more senior position, you must consider a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing. Although these will take longer to complete, you will quite clearly set yourself apart from others who are seeking employment or looking to advance their career within this field.

3) How Will I Pay?

Obviously the higher the level of the degree you seek, the higher the associated fees will be. However, there are many financial aids in terms of study loans or scholarships offered by government and private sectors. This is mainly due to the vast shortage of nurses and increasing number of available positions within this field. People are actively being encouraged to enter a career in nursing because of this.

Studying and completing Nursing Degree Programs Online will lead you to one of the most rewarding and satisfying careers you may ever wish to enter.

Even in this slowing economy, medicine continues to grow. There is a great shortage of nurses nationwide and most sources state that nurses will continue to be in demand well into the future. A nursing degree is a stable and secure career, but if you find yourself short on time, a nursing degree online maybe just right for you. Online classes gives a student the flexibility of working school into their lives instead of trying to work their lives into school. A student will find that they are able to take class when it is convenient for them, even if this is the middle of the night.

As you research your options through the web, you will see that there a number of school that offer a nursing degree online. The most important thing to remember is, prior to signing up with any school, make sure they are accredited. This will allow you to transfer credits if you want to continue your education, and only accredited schools are recognized by the state boards of nursing. Another thing you will notice is the variety of degrees that are offered. There is the basic CNA, leading to the LPN, and then under the RN you can either obtain an associates degree, bachelor’s degree or even a masters in nursing.

For the person interested in nursing but needs to get into the work force as soon as possible, the entry level Certified Nurses Aide (CNA) maybe something to consider. This certification only takes a few weeks, then you are able to take the certification test and begin working. For someone that wants a nursing license and can commit about one year to school, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) would be a good choice. Many schools offer a nursing degree online for the LPN. And if you have already received your CNA certification, then they will transfer this education and experience toward your LPN.

Another option, for the individual that has more time to spend in school, is the Registered Nurse (RN) degree. This nursing degree online can take from two to four years depending on which route you choose. The two year program gives you an associates degree, allowing you to begin work at the entry level position of the RN. While this is faster, the pay and job opportunities are less than the next option. The four year degree gives you a bachelor’s in nursing, this degree assures that you will enter the nursing field at the professional level. The pay and job options are best for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Any credits you have earned from an accredited LPN course will transfer to your RN program online.

Associate Degree Nursing Schools

Nurses are indispensable when aiding doctors in surgeries or to check up on patients in hospitals. To be a nursing sister at the ward, you need to have an associate degree from reputable nursing schools. There are some scholarships that offer you to study nursing in Australia like Colombo Plan Scholarship. When you have such qualifications, then you can really practice nursing, giving health care to patients in the wards of hospitals.

Various Disciplines

In nursing, there are various disciplines that you can specialize in like midwifery, accident and emergency care, pediatrics, gerontology, etc. In the first year, you learn about general nursing care and the human body. Subsequently you will study more in depth and specialize to various disciplines. You will also learn how to give injections to patients and how to set up drips by inserting the needle through the wrist. Nursing is a rewarding career if not the most worthwhile vocation to be in. It need not be a dirty job to clean up patients when they clear their bowels, but with time, you will get used to it as someone has to do the job.

Different Shifts

Nurses can also be well paid for rich clients inflicted with illness like Alzheimer’s Disease and work in two shifts – - day time shift and night time shift. Such patients need round the clock nursing care to bath, feed, clean, carry, and to shift sleeping positions on the bed at night. Nurses are basically assistants to doctors and they can raise an alarm if they sense something is wrong and needs urgent attention. Some nurses also suggest what type of food is beneficial to the patients and full of required nutrients. Nurses that work in night shifts are naturally paid more than those working in day shift. Even in the hospitals, this is also the standard practice.

Rewarding Job

Associate degree nursing schools can produce graduates who are competent, caring, patient and skillful. Some nurses are so devoted to their jobs and enjoyed it so much that they decided to upgrade to become a medical officer after saving up and going through medical college. Due to their extensive experience in the ward, they are naturally more knowledgeable and can foresee the problems in caring for a patient in the hospital. There are also cases of top students choosing to study nursing in associate degree nursing schools. They will make better nurses who are most of all, patient, kind and understanding when doing their rounds in the wards. They can render health services to utmost professionalism.

Not for Everyone

Nursing is one job that is not for every Tom, Dick or Harry. Not everyone can withstand the mundane tasks of cleaning up a patient after clearing his bowels or to bathe him or her on a daily basis. You also need to be gentle when handling patients and changing of soiled bed sheets or adult pampas. That is why in some countries like the Middle East, they are willing to pay top US dollars to hire nurses to work there. For many nurses, this is like a gold mine or striking lottery. Therefore, more people are registering in associate degree nursing schools to study the four year course to become nursing sisters and to aid doctors in the hospitals.

Once you have made the decision to pursue an LPN degree online, it’s time for comparing online LPN nursing schools. A few factors should go into your decision, such as your needs and career goals. The following information will help you in the process.

Accreditation

One primary factor when comparing online LPN nursing schools is accreditation. Any school you choose should be accredited by one of the primary nursing professional organizations. These are The National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission and The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Because an LPN program prepares you for state certification, this accreditation is essential. Your state may not accept an LPN degree from a non-accredited organization. Many schools post accreditation information on their websites. You can also contact these organizations directly. Before enrolling, be sure that your state will accept the program for preparation to take the NCLEX licensing examination.

Rankings and Reports

Another way for comparing online LPN nursing schools is by finding out how other organizations rank the school as well as the school’s information on graduates. The U.S. News and World Report ranks many colleges including online nursing programs. This one place to look for information. However, keep in mind that rankings are only one way to determine a school’s worth. Additional information you should try to obtain from the school is about its graduates. For example, you may be able to find out how many students pass the NCLEX examination on the first attempt and how many are employed. This information can give you a good idea of how well prepared you will be following graduation.

Word of Mouth

Comparing online nursing LPN schools by talking to those who have attended these programs is another way to learn more about each. If you are a member of a professional nursing organization, you can inquire about online programs. Other tools on the Internet, such as newsgroups, can also provide additional information on the best online LPN programs. One of the best ways to learn about a school is by talking to those who have been there.

America is currently experiencing the worst nursing shortage since the 1960s. Attempts to right the shortage are everywhere, with bulletin boards advertising the field, legislation for scholarships in the works, and sign-on bonuses at some hospitals luring in prospective nurses. However, in order to fill the gap, hospitals would need to hire 95% more nurses by 2025, and with only a 2% increase in the number of nurses in the last year, this goal seems unattainable.

When ads for nurses are in trade magazines and newspapers, you have the first signs of a regional shortage. When salaries rise, this is indicative of a larger shortage, following the rules of supply and demand. However, today’s economy has nurses being laid off, and over staffing is driving nurses out of the work force as a consequence of dissatisfaction.

The economic downturn has also reduced recruitment funds. Money spent on advertising and wage increases has diminished, which limits recruitment to some of the lesser effective forms of recruitment.

Support for pro-nurse legislation is an effective means of recruiting nurses to your hospital. Showing that you care about nurse-to-patient ratios intimates care for the nurses, as both a group of workers, and as individuals.

Hospitals that provide sign-on bonuses for specialized nursing, like labor and delivery, or undesirable positions, like night shifts, do well in attracting applicants. Because studies are showing that specialized nursing fields are getting the worst of the nursing shortage, some hospitals are offering the nurses already on staff scholarships and other opportunities to be trained in these areas, like emergency room and critical care.

Advertising remains an effective way of recruiting nursing students. Public service announcements provide valuable information about one of the only remaining American industries experiencing growth. One of the biggest untapped resources in the nursing field is man. Advertisements that appeal to men, rather than women, can help bring in both jobs and diversity in the workplace.

Wage increases are one of the most important means of attracting applicants. Non-wage benefits, like health club memberships, are not effective in recruiting new nurses, as they are designed to reward currently employed nurses. In the long run, America will still suffer as baby boomers reach their sixties and seventies.

International recruitment provides short-term relief of the nursing shortage. Some hospitals advertise in Canada, Mexico and other countries for nursing jobs, believing that the promise of work will cause immigration that will benefit the hospital. This is frequently true, but doesn’t provide many long-term benefits as many nurses will move back to their country of origin, again depriving the hospital of the needed staff.

Supporting proposals that provide funds for nursing students can contribute to the number of nurses to be hired in the future. The more students that are able to enter the field, the more students will graduate, pursuing careers in the health care sector. Affordable schooling can open a lot of doors for hospitals.

Finally, retention can be one of the biggest selling points for a hospital’s recruitment. Offering benefits and education opportunities makes for a happier staff, and one that would be more likely to advertise your hospital by word of mouth.

So you are now a registered nurse! Well done! But what’s in store for you in the health care arena? Is there still more “life” after passing the NCLEX and getting your long-awaited and well-esteemed nursing professional license?

Now that you have earned your Bachelors of Science in Nursing, you must be eager to get your first nursing job. That is to be expected. However, don’t let that stop you from advancing your career further. Surely, you wouldn’t want to be at the same entry-level, average-paying nursing job doing the same nursing tasks day in and day out for years.

You have many opportunities waiting for you when you take on more training and education.

To advance your nursing career, your next job is to get more specialized training and further your education and clinical experience in various health care settings.

Gaining advanced nursing career programs will open greater career prospects. Most well acclaimed high-paying nursing positions are offered only to those with a Master’s degree in nursing.

Although having your Bachelor’s Science degree in Nursing is enough for some senior-level nursing jobs, a master’s degree is more favorable in the end; especially if you are considering moving to a specialized field of nursing.

In health care management, nurses with advanced nursing degrees may be promoted to higher levels in the nursing administration. This would mean greater responsibilities, wider scope of practice, and greater income potential.

Alternatively, you may consider going into business with your nursing career – something most experienced nurses do nowadays in the US. They set up and manage their own nursing care such as outpatient clinics where they can directly treat patients with the help of a doctor. Another is a nursing home providing much needed care to the elderly and disabled young adults.

There are still other exciting career prospects for licensed nurses. So long as you keep on improving your skills, getting a wide range of clinical experience, receiving specialized training, and gaining further education on nursing specialty areas.

It is important that you plan early on which path to take. Picking up more specialized training and strengthening your clinical skills advances your nursing career thus, giving you greater opportunities, both professionally and financially. The possibilities are endless!

The health care industry is expanding enormously, and finding the best nursing school is the objective of many who are looking to enter the field for the first time, or pursue an advanced degree in nursing. As technology continues to grow, nurses will be expected to provide care to patients over great distances via the Internet as well as by telephone. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, on average, by 2012, the employment rate of Registered Nurses will exceed the growth rate of all other occupations. Therefore, if you are looking to apply to the best nursing schools 2009, you may want to begin your search by determining which schools are pushing technology.

There are several questions that you may want to ask yourself or examine in order to determine which programs are ranking as the best nursing school. Firstly, do you want to attend school locally or are you able to travel or perhaps relocate? In the U.S., there are at least 739 nursing schools. Out of those, 728 offer full-time programs and 478 also offer part-time programs. In its June 2009 edition, U.S. News and World Report lists top nursing programs across the country. However, this data was gathered in 2007, and is based on ratings by nursing educators, who essentially nominated up to 10 schools for each area of excellence.

There are many professional nursing sites and periodicals where you can get detailed information about programs as well as the most recent awards in your field of interest. One such site is The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), which in November gave out Awards for Excellence in Gerontological Nursing Education. The categories included:

1. Baccalaureate-Level Curricular Innovation at Harding University College of Nursing (Arkansas) and University of Southern Indiana College of Nursing and Health Professions.

2. Advanced Practice-Level Curricular Innovation at Oregon Health & Science University School of Nursing.

3. Geriatric Nursing Faculty Champion at the Elaine C. Hubbard Center for Nursing Research on Aging, University of Rochester School of Nursing.

4. Outstanding School of Nursing Communications at Mennonite College of Nursing at Illinois State University.,

When searching for a nursing program or school, it is recommended that you check out the school websites yourself in order to ascertain whether the program and school meets your own standards. A phone call and visit to the school is always best before making a final decision. Perhaps you might even sit in on a class or two, speak to a few students, as well as professors who might very well be the ones teaching you the next semester.

Please keep in mind that the best nursing school for others may not be the best choice for you. There are many factors to keep in mind including location, cost, schedule, affiliated hospitals, medical facilities, and staff. For older students, flexibility may not be an option. The schools and programs mentioned above are just a tiny sampling of the broad range of nursing specialties offered by schools and universities. Additionally, more and more universities and colleges are offering online degree programs, which are ranked accordingly.
